Getting your engagement pictures, or any kind of pictures, taken is such an awesome experience. You invest time and money into this, so you want to look your best. Picking the right outfit(s) can totally make a huge difference in how your pictures turn out and how you feel during your shoot!

1. Wear what you feel comfortable in

Ask yourself, what do you feel the most comfortable and confident in. You want to wear something that is flattering to you and your body. I am curvy and tall, I tend to wear darker colors so that I feel that my curves are better accented and shown. Not in a way that is revealing, but complimenting. I also love something flowy, this allows me to move around and not worry about what is hugging me in the wrong places.

2. Dress for the occasion

Think about where you will go. Dress to the occasion and the season. If you are going out in the woods, maybe don’t wear heels. If you do want to wear some nice shoes, bring a change of shoes with you so you don’t have trouble walking around in the dirt and stones! You want to enjoy this time and make it as stress free as possible. If your engagement session is in the fall you can accessorize and layer up. If you have a session in the summer, you wear something light in material or a flow-y dress and he can wear a short sleeved button up.

3. Wear Complimentary Colors

Colors - think about complementary colors. You don’t have to be matching every color, but compliment one another. You want to avoid neon and bright colors that will reflect on your skin. Bright colors (like teal or neon pink or salmon) will show in your skin! I have a Pinterest board with color pallets and outfit inspiration. Feel free to ask your photographer what colors they recommend for the location you are going to.

4. Think about your underwear

Underwear! Ok yes, this is totally something to consider. Don’t wear something that will show through your pants. Try and wear something that is snug to make sure you are nice and secure. Wear something that is flattering to your outfit, no show or something snug. Also, consider those straps! Do you want it to show (probably not!)? Have you thought about a bralette or a sticky bra? If you are doing a steamy couples session, then heck yes get the cutest underwear you can get. But typically you want things to stay hidden and keep things in place.

5. Details Matter

Iron your clothes. Yes photographers can photoshop, but we don’t want to spend hours trying to perfect something that could have been avoided. Some things to consider or avoid are things like watches - do you wear a smartwatch or fitbit everyday? Is this something that you want in your pictures? If not - don’t wear it. Hair ties on the wrist, take them off. And your nails - have them nice and clean. You shouldn’t have chipped nail polish to distract anything away from you.
Accessories and details. Your details matter. I’ve had a couple have matching jackets with their new last name on the back, and someone with a custom jacket with embroidery that meant something to them. If you have something that means something to you, incorporate it into your pictures!

6. Look Like You

This is something you can take or leave, but something I personally stand behind. If you want a really elegant or something different that your everyday, classic you style, also bring a change of clothes to get an outfit that looks like you. I think that pictures should showcase you and your true authentic self. If this means buying an outfit that isn’t your normal look but you feel your very best in and is totally your style, go for it!

Being comfortable and confident will show in your pictures. If you are insecure in a low neckline or the way the pants fit you, your body language will show. Unless you’re really good at faking it! I think that you should remember how you felt in the moment with pictures, and your outfit and attitude can create the scene for your memories.

So things to think about - wearing good underwear, think about the location and shoes to wear, colors that compliment one another, and feeling comfortable and confident. Have fun with it!!!
